Why We Chose Natural Sea Sponges

The Natural Intimacy Brand

Our mission is to provide thoughtful products for mindful consumers, so when we were presented with natural sea sponges as products to sell, we couldn’t resist.

We were introduced to the Natural Intimacy brand of sponges and later the Sensible Options brand of sponges. Both product ranges feature sustainably harvested sponges packaged in plastic-free materials. Since sponges are biodegradable and compostable, we recognized that we could tick many boxes for ethical consumers, so we couldn’t say no!

As we began to consider which products and variations to stock, we realized that there was a vast amount of information we needed to absorb (sorry for the pun!) regarding the different types of sponges and their uses.

Fine Silk Sponges

Fine Silk sponges are grown in both the Mediterranean and Caribbean regions. However, the cooler temperatures of the Mediterranean, along with various other environmental factors, result in two distinct types of sponges. Without a doubt, the Mediterranean Silk sponge is the superior quality option. Its pores are significantly smaller, producing a finer and smoother texture. Additionally, the sponges are more robust, ensuring their longevity even with regular use. Greater absorbency is another notable attribute of the Mediterranean, making them the ideal choice for “IntimateCare” sponges—essentially reusable tampons.

Mediterranean Silk sponges are of a higher grade compared to their Caribbean counterparts, which is logical given their superior quality. Consequently, they come with a slightly higher price. However, it’s important to note that the Caribbean Silk sponges are not inferior; they are simply of a lower grade without the exceptional qualities of the Mediterranean Silks. This makes them suitable for “FacialCare” sponges—makeup removal, blending, and exfoliation, where absorbency is not the primary concern.

HoneyComb and Grass Sponges

These sponges are significantly larger than the Fine Silk sponges. When you wet a Fine Silk sponge, which is more than three or four inches across, it flops over easily. HoneyComb and Grass sponges, on the other hand, have a much larger tubular structure that prevents them from flopping when a large piece of sponge is wet. These two types of sponges are used accordingly.

HoneyComb sponges are sourced from the Mediterranean Sea, while Grass sponges come from the Caribbean. Both types of sponges are suitable for BodyCare and BabyCare duties, but HoneyComb sponges are denser and of higher quality, making them more durable and long-lasting than Grass sponges. It’s often said that the best things come at a higher price. While HoneyComb sponges may be slightly more expensive, many of our customers are willing to pay for the superior quality and durability.

To ensure that natural, high-quality sponges are accessible to all our customers, regardless of their budget, we will be offering both HoneyComb and Grass sponges. Additionally, we will provide guidance and education to help customers make informed decisions about choosing between price and quality.
